The History of Economics Society will hold its 52nd annual meeting from June 27 to 30, 2025 at the University of Richmond in Richmond, VA.

Richmond was recently listed by CNN travel as No. 1 on its list of US cities to visit. It has something for everyone: museumsbreweriesrestaurants, and outdoor activities. The University of Richmond is known for its beautiful campus and facilities.

We are pleased to announce our 2025 plenary speakers: Professor Masazumi Wakatabe, of Waseda University, who served as Deputy Governor of the Bank of Japan from 2018 to 2023; Bart Wilson, Professor and Donald P. Kennedy Chair in Economics and Law and Director, Smith Institute for Political Economy and Philosophy at Chapman University; and immediate past HES president, Ross Emmett, Professor of Economic Thought, School of Civic and Economic Thought and Leadership (SCETL) and Director, Center for the Study of Economic Liberty, SCETL, Arizona State University, who will give the presidential address.

The opening reception will take place at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond on Friday, June 27 from 6-8 p.m.

We invite individual paper proposals, and we encourage proposals for full sessions. Submissions may be submitted through our website, which will open on January 7, 2025. The deadline for submissions is March 1, 2025. Scholars who will require visas to travel to the US are encouraged to submit proposals in advance of the deadline for consideration by the local organizing committee.

An early bird registration fee of $150 will be available until April 15, 2025, midnight US Central time. The fee for regular attendants registering after this date will be $200. Deeply discounted registration, reception, and banquet fees will be offered for students and scholars with insufficient institutional support. Details will be posted on the website.

The Society has secured preferential rates with two hotels, The Westin Richmond and Embassy Suites by Hilton Richmond. Embassy Suites rooms will be available for conference participants for $179 (standard king) and $199 (double queen) per night/breakfast and early evening happy hour included. Westin Richmond rooms will be available for $159 per night. A free shuttle service will be provided to transport participants between the hotels and the main conference site. The reception and banquet will be held on Sunday, June 29, at the University of Richmond.

YOUNG SCHOLARS

The HES provides support for several Warren J. and Sylvia J. Samuels Young Scholars to present papers at the conference, in the form of free registration, banquet and reception tickets, three nights lodging at the conference hotel, and a year’s membership in the society. A Young Scholar must be a current PhD candidate or have been awarded a PhD in 2022 or later. Those interested in having their paper considered for the Young Scholars program will be able to indicate this when submitting their paper proposal through the conference website and will be contacted subsequently with more details about the program.
