Transportation
- To York:
From the airport to York University, your best option is a flat-rate limo. When you walk out of the airport, you will see signs for taxis and for limos. Take a limo – the fare to York is C$37, and you may share a car.
Map of York campus
When arriving from the airport, go to building 42 on the campus map, the Seymour Schulich Building (SSB). Instruct the driver to go into the main campus entrance off Keele, York Blvd. Go to the first stop sign at Ian MacDonald Blvd. and turn left, then turn immediately left again to double back onto York Blvd, and pull up at the SSB on the corner. Conference registration is immediately inside the doors at the corner of York Blvd. and Ian MacDonald Blvd.
If you are stating at the Executive Learning Centre Hotel (building 94 on the map), it is connected to the SSB. If you are staying at the Pond Road Residence (building 35), it is a 5 minute walk from the registration, and we will have students to help get you there if you require assistance.
If you have a car, you should park at the Student Services Parking Garage (building 84); the entrance is off of James Gilles St. Be forewarned that parking is expensive – $14/day – about the same rates as downtown Toronto!
If you are interested in a very cheap (C$2.75) but 90 –120 minute trip to York by public transit, you can take the 192 Airport Rocket (click here) to Kipling subway station, which is at the end of the Bloor line. Take the subway to St. George station, walk up to the Yonge-Univesity line and take a northbound train to Downsview station (the end of the line). Transfer to the 196 Express bus (if it is running) or 106 Local bus to York University. The bus will let you off in front of York Lanes, facing the Common, The Seymour Schulich Building, where registration and all conference activities will occur, is just across the common at the corner of York Blvd. and Ian MacDonald Blvd. This will take at least 90 minutes.
- To Downtown Hotels:
From the airport to the downtown hotels, the easiest option is also a limo. The fare is around $50.
There is also a much cheaper public transit option (C$2.75) that will take about an hour. Click here, for information on the 192 Airport Rocket, an express bus that will take you to the Kipling subway station at the end of the Bloor line. Get on the subway (only one line, only in one direction).
If you are staying at the Midtown Holiday Inn, get off at St. George station and walk half a block west on Bloor – the hotel is on the north side. If you are staying at the Holiday Inn on King, also get off at St. George station and go up to the Yonge-University subway line. Take a southbound train (it will say to Finch Station) and get off at St. Andrew station. That station is at King Street – walk a few blocks west to the hotel.
For detailed subway route and schedule information, click here.
If you are staying downtown, for Saturday, you might consider buying a TTC day pass for C$9, which gives you unlimited use of the entire transit system.
Area Attractions
- The Toronto Blue Jays are playing the Atlanta Braves in a major league baseball game on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Rogers Centre. If you take the subway, you can walk from Union Station or St. Andrews Station. For directions, click here.
- The Toronto Jazz Festival is on from June 20-29, so your Saturday night plans can include jazz if you wish.
- There is a fabulous used book store, Atticus Books within a 5 minute walk of the Holiday Inn Midtown. It is at 84 Harbord Street,
Toronto, Ontario,
Canada M5S 1G5
. Selection and quality are outstanding, but prices are not cheap. Catalogue is also online.
- The Royal Ontario Museum is at Bloor and Avenue Road, a 5 minute walk from the Holiday Inn Midtown. There is a striking new façade designed by Daniel Libeskind, and a major Darwin exhibition.
- The Art Gallery of Ontario has been closed, unfortunately, for over a year for completion of the Frank Gehry (a hometown Toronto boy) designed renovation.
- The Hockey Hall of Fame (probably for Steve Medema and not many others)
is at the corner of Yonge and Front Streets, a 5 minute walk from the Union Station subway stop.
